Strategies for Ancestor Searching
Genealogy is like detective work.
We start with a few facts.
We look for clues.
We make assumptions and then test them.
Genealogical research
process:
1. Collect and organize personal sources and record data.
2. Identify family members.
3. Contact family members for genealogical information.
4. Add their information to the record.
5. Survey compiled records like the Ancestral File®.
6. Narrow focus of research to one person.
7. Identify available resources for that state and county.
8. Select the tool most likely to have the facts needed.
9. Acquire the record, borrow, rent or buy it.
10. Search the records for desired information.
11. Record the source in the research log.
12. Add the information, if any, to the genealogical record.
13. Evaluate the data and begin the cycle again with #6.
